Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about basement finishing and adding a kitchen or wet bar to a basement.

The most significant factor that determines the cost of a kitchen or wet bar is the number of cabinets used. More cabinets mean more countertops, more backsplash, more flooring… So, the big question is, how much do you need? The most common wet bar or kitchenette option we install is a 5 cabinet setup with a mini fridge and a microwave. This cost about $5,000. They look great and serve their purpose. For most, this is a great and relatively inexpensive option. A full kitchen can cost $10,000 or more, depending on the number of cabinets you want.

A good-quality semi-custom cabinet from AWA Cabinets or a similar cabinet shop will cost about $500 each. For most of our clients, this is exactly what they want for their basement. We occasionally have clients who want custom cabinets, which can be very expensive. The average cost per cabinet in the last kitchen we did with custom cabinets was over $1,200 each. That makes for a costly kitchen or wet bar.

The most common countertop is granite. There are two primary ways to purchase granite tops. The first is to go to a stone yard and buy a granite slab, and have your countertops fabricated from this slab. The benefit of this choice is that you get exactly what you want, and the countertops look fantastic. A second option for granite, and the one we recommend for our clients, is to purchase prefabricated granite countertops. There are usually ten styles to choose from. The downside is that there aren’t options for thickness, edge detail, or too many color choices. But the price is right, and most can find a countertop they like from the available options.

We do not include appliances. There are so many options that it is hard for us to specify appliances that you’ll like. It is also good to shop for a sale and get a deal on the appliances you want and that have the features and colors that you think are best. For a small fee, we can help you install the cabinets and verify that they are working properly.
