Great Basement Living Rooms

At Utah Basement Specialists, one of our goals is to help you find ways to maximize the enjoyment of your home through creative basement finishes. One of the most common features we suggest when basement bedrooms are not needed for a growing family is utilizing the home gym space. With a few simple additions, this room can become a functional space that meets your needs. Some standard and not-too-expensive options we can add include prefabricated floor-to-ceiling mirrors, cooling fans, sound systems, rubber floors, wall-mount TVs, and weight racks. These are all great options to make your home gym a place you want to utilize for your workouts. This is a great way to use an unused bedroom and make it a feature you’ll love for your basement finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about basement finishing and how to finish a workable home gym.

Obviously, there is a cost for every feature we add to a standard basement finish. But home gym upgrades are not too expensive. A typical home gym upgrade will cost less than $2000 and could be much less. Everything depends on the features you want and how custom your finishes are.

Mirrors seem to be the most common request for a home gym. I think this gives the room a gym-like feel and helps with workout motivation. Custom mirrors can be expensive and not recommended for a home gym. A better option would be to use a prefabricated system that is designed for home gyms. These are much less expensive and look great. You can easily do an entire wall for less than $1,500. This is an excellent option for most basement home gyms.

It seems that the top two items for making a home gym more appealing to use are a good sound system and wall-mounted TVs in the right spots. A good sound system is a must. Music can get the blood flowing and make a workout much more fun. Almost every home gym we build has a sound system. Another popular feature is installing TVs in just the right spot to make time on a treadmill a little less boring. This is easy to figure out, and the overall cost is minimal. These items are great features to add to your basement home gym.

The most popular flooring is also the cheapest. Rubberized flooring is great for home gyms and is cheap. Generally, we use the type that does not require glue. The glue has a tendency to fail over time, and then the glued floor starts to curl at the edges. Floors that are not designed for glue lay flat and just work. Another popular option is LVP flooring. LVP is very durable and can usually stand up to the pounding from a home gym, but it is not very forgiving to your joints. Offen, clients put rubberized mats over the LVP to add a cushion. This works but is much more expensive than just going with the mats.
