Basement Finishing
Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about basement finishing and how to create a great basement living room.

A typical basement takes 10 to 12 weeks to finish. If your basement has numerous custom features, it will take longer. Kitchens also add to the overall time to complete a basement. This is the last process we do for a basement finishing project, and countertop templating and fabrication always take about two weeks to complete.

Almost everyone wants an entertainment center. For years, the premium options were a projector and screen. This started to change about eight years ago. Now, we install a few projectors a year, and the vast majority of the systems we install are for big-screen TVs. Some of these are truly huge and impressive. It almost feels like you’re a part of the actions. The picture is so life-like. The price continues to fall for large, high-quality units. You can now get a system with great audio equipment for less than $2000. There are also great options for those on a tighter budget that still look great.

Ceiling or sound-dampening insulation is not a code requirement for basement finishing. Numerous options vary in effectiveness and price. Since COVID-19, the prices for most construction materials have moderated back to pre-pandemic levels, but this is not the case for insulation. A standard bat insulation, installed, will cost about $1.70 per square foot. A good quality blow-in insulation will run about $2.25 per square foot. To put this in perspective, this is more expensive than ceiling drywall. The benefits are real. The sound dampening does work. The big question is whether more expensive insulation is proportionally better than standard insulation. Yes, expensive insulation has a modest sound-dampening benefit, but that benefit becomes smaller as you get into specialty products. For most, a standard batt or blow-in insulation will work well and save you money.

There are two main types of flooring that we install in basement family rooms. The first is carpet. The benefits of carpets are that they are inexpensive and common. You can find many carpets at great prices and tailor them to your style and tastes. The downside to carpet is that it is less durable than other flooring options and not waterproof. Waterproof flooring is important for some due to a high water table. However, for most people, carpet is the best and most comfortable choice for a basement living room. Another popular choice for living room flooring is LVP Planks. These are still moderately priced at 5-6 per square foot. They are very durable and look great. The downside to LVP is that it is a hard surface and, therefore, not as comfortable. Also, if you get a low-quality product, it has a tendency to start to come apart at the seams. LVP is a beautiful, waterproof, and durable option for those who need it. For most, carpet is a better option for the family room.
